Black History Month
by Natalie MooreDid you know that as early as three years old children are already classifying people based on their appearance?
We have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity, campaign for equality and learn with black history month this month.
Learning about Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement in America really set me on a path for life. It made me ask so many questions about humanity, life, our purpose.... From here I studied Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics and went on to become a secondary school RE Teacher.
It is so important that we have conversations, especially with children, about issues of prejudice and discrimination so that we can learn to listen more, understand more and do more to tackle inequality.
This weekend have a conversation with your children. Ask them what they think prejudice means. Can they think of any examples? Talk about how people may be treated unfairly because of how they look. Unicef have some amazing resources if you struggle with how to talk about this.
I would be thrilled to see any drawings, models, poems or posters that your little ones have/can create the topic. In fact, if you send us a picture or tag us in a photo of their work we will enter you into draw for a free 'STOP THE HATE' T-Shirt.
